DRAM module makers to see negative capex growth in 2008:

digitimes.com

me:

Well, if Dram capex is falling off a cliff one would expect NOR capex to be doing the same. I'm really glad SPSN decided to go slowly into SP1 expansion. If SPSN had gone to 4k WSPW there would have been a much greater chance of excess capacity, but with 2K WSPW they can probably use all the new capacity and still maintain ASPs.

Personally, I don't think the rest of the world is going to have nearly the problems the U.S. is going to have from the slowdown/recession. Also, even in a slowdown, I don't see the NOR market shrinking any, at least on the handset side.

Basic handsets are fast becoming an indispensable requirement to life all over the world. Combine that with the way they're replacing twisted pair sets and it's hard to see any slowdown in demand occurring in the near future. Further, the implementation of new wireless standards guarantees upward mobility in the handset market over time. Future wireless standards seem to guarantee that wireless alone will be able to handle all the communications needs of the world. Of course there will still be a need for a wired internet, but fiber to the curb may become irrelevant very soon.
