"I think it's obvious what Steve originally meant."
Not very obvious at all. Steve said something that wasn't true. No one here has bragged about those countries. Chris made a statement, which is factual, as to why offering free medical care to poor Cubans isn't going to be an extraordinary boon to them. You have been trying to spin that as some sort of lavish praise.
Tench, you need to sit down with a dictionary and find out what "nuance" really means. Here, let me help.
nu·ance /'nu?ns, 'nyu-, nu'?ns, nyu-; Fr. nü'?~s/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[noo-ahns, nyoo-, noo-ahns, nyoo-; Fr. ny-ahns] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation –noun, plural -anc·es /-?ns?z, -'?ns?z; Fr. -'?~s/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[-ahn-siz, -ahn-siz; Fr. -ahns] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation. 1. a subtle difference or distinction in expression, meaning, response, etc. 2. a very slight difference or variation in color or tone. [Origin: 1775–85; < F: shade, hue, equiv. to nu(er) to shade (lit., to cloud < VL *nubare, deriv. of *nuba, for L nubés cloud) + -ance -ance]
Z and I are not drawing subtle differences or using very slight differences in color or tone. Saying that Cubans already get free medical care is not heaping lavish praise on Cuba. Or bragging about it, for that matter. It is a fact. Period. End of story. Now, true, Chris could have gone on and analyzed how the Cuban leadership has locked their country into producing low wage commodities like sugar. But that would have been pretty extraneous to the point he was making.
"You think you can get away with praising Cuba's universal health care while still holding the position that Cuba's socialism is a failure. "
The statement that Chris made is not what you are claiming. He wasn't praising it, just pointing out a simple fact. A fact that is totally unchanged by the failures of their government. Just like Bush getting through a day without choking on a pretzel or not invading a small country on false pretenses makes his administration a success.
"Among other things, that gives you guys a position from which to attack Steve's comment."
His statement was wrong. And instead of manning up to it, or even a lame "it seems like it", he tried to spin it. Just as you are trying to do.
It is not "nuance" to call BS, well, BS. Live with it. |
