" More than 73,000,000 people are below the poverty level."

My bad.....it is 37,000,000. I was reading the chart for 18 yrs old and under.....blame the on the wine and hour of the evening.

But from another source....

72.14.205.104

" Further, the demographic profile of our subjects is relatively similar to that reported in the 1998 US Census data. For example, having no
health insurance was reported by 44% of our subjects
whose income was less than 100% of the federal pov-
erty level and by 46% of those with incomes between
100%–150% of the level. These percentages compare
to the 48% and 39% figures reported by the 1998 US
Census study.
Thirty-seven percent of our subjects with incomes at
or below 200% of the federal poverty level did not have
health care coverage for part or all of 1999."

You wrote....."But even with $50k and a family of four you should be able to buy insurance if you manage your money well and don't live in a very expensive area."

That's pretty flippant, I think, since the link above says that 37% of those with 2X (about 50K) the poverty level income don't have insurance.
