I keep meaning to write a piece about Port, of which I am very fond. There is certainly nothing like a well-aged Port from a good year and a favorite house, but like any other wine there is a lot of personal preference involved. To me, the big bargain in Port is Late Bottled Vintage. If you are not familiar with Port terms, this is a vintage Port which has typically spent 4 years, sometimes 6 in the barrel before bottling instead of the normal 2 years for a vintage Port. The result is that it is ready to drink much earlier. It may not hit the ultimate peak of that perfect vintage Port, but an LBV from a house whose style you like is something you will probably like better than an aged vintage Port from a house you don't particularly care for. Myself, I am especially fond of Smith Woodhouse as I think they make the most elegant Ports, vintage or LBV. They age their LBV in bottle for quite a while before releasing it, unlike most houses who release it almost right away. E.g., their current release is 1995 while most houses current release is 2001. That's where some of the elegance comes from. Krohn I like for its chocolate tones and full flavors. I would buy it too at a much higher price than it sells for, so the low price makes it a no brainer for regular stock.
