"Ten and his peers have convinced themselves that had Cuba used a capitalist economic model it would be the Beverly Hills of the third world." At one point, it had a fairly well off middle class. The problem is that what fueled it was the casinos, prostitution, etc. Forced prostitution was common, the younger the better. Cuba was the "go to" place for vice. Graft and corruption was built right into the government. Google "Batista" and see what I mean. Fidel changed all that. For the poor, and there were a lot of them, things immensely improved. Now the middle and upper classes got screwed, but they didn't have the numbers. And that was what made Fidel so popular in Cuba. Which is not to say that Fidel is some great guy. But Batista was much, much worse.
