"You rightwingers are still stuck back in the reagan era"

I have one of the most liberal viewpoints on SI - just ask Prolife or Longnshort.

I just don't think its particularly progressive of you to swallow the NRA viewpoint that its the "phychos" fault that all this gun violence occurs.

My wife works with people with mental illness and the most overwhelming characteristic you would use to describe such people is passive.

Its pathetic for the NRA to blame perhaps the most defenseless segment of our society - people with mental illness. Its true that there is such a thing as a dangerous psychotic. I would guess however that is a far lower percentage among those with mental illness than that of the criminal element in "normal" society.

If you have a violent past or have been involuntarily committed because of mental illness then I agree you should not get a gun.

What you said was that anyone having been prescribed a "psychotropic" should have his medical records available to Billy Bob down at the gun show. You obviously have no idea how widespread the use of anti-depressants is.

Personally I am far more in favor of privacy in such matters and maybe we should be making it just a wee bit harder for anyone to get there hands on a lethal killing machine in our society.

Besides there are so many guns available in so many ways that even blocking the sale to anyone in particular won't really do much to slow down a determined killer. Having said that its gun proliferation that is the real reason for so much gun death.

I don't think it a coincidence that the shooter in Illinois was also a bit of a "gun nut" - pardon the pun.
