I would not be surprised to see some structural changes within housing.
In the long run there will be demand for single family housing in California but housing must be closer aligned to jobs - me thinks more and more people get tired to spend 90 to 120 minutes one way just to live the American Dream.

Or look at Las Vegas - Nowadays one must be plumb crazy to build a city in the desert....
