LPG is safer than petrol. Petrol tanks are flimsier than LPG tanks. As the dopey guys who tried to blow up Glasgow airport found, LPG tanks are no use as bombs. All that happened was the pressure relief valves let go and a jet of flames made a good visual effect for the television industry.

A vehicle LPG tank rupture is more spectacular but does not result in much of an explosion, being more of a whoosh in a big ball of flame as the liquid pours out.

I haven't seen accident data, but I guess that deaths due to petrol vehicle fires are about 50 times as frequent in crashes involving petrol vehicles compared with LPG vehicles. Maybe Google has data. I just checked and can't find anything easily.
