That's the point of insurance. Its worth a lot as insurance, but perhaps they want something other than insurance.

Definitely need a new definition for insurance.

1. My employer provided "insurance" is 100% paid, no deductible, minimal co-pays.

2. A policy with a $1000 deductible (and you figure a family of four will have enough problems to eat that up) costs between (for the sake of argument) $7K and $10K. So the effective cost for health care for the family of four making $40K is between $8K and $11K. You think they can afford that?

3. You've got the $5K deductible plans that are fairly cheap... it anything is cheap to a family of 4 earning $40K. But for them that's basically health bankruptcy insurance. No way they can afford to pay $5K per year on health care.

1, 2 and 3 are very different animals. The national plans floating around are closer to #1.

But to take #3 and say "Jeez health insurance is cheap" is disingenuous. It's not even health insurance as defined by what most people get through work.
