There is no making a genuine peace with extremists anywhere whether they are fundi religious or extreme about some other authority. Extremists by nature are coercive brutes that demand subjugation, which is not genuine peace. Israel is, after all, the home of fundamentalist Jews and they are our ally. It is possible to establish alliances with political regions that are not posing a direct threat to the USA and who are willing to oppose those who threaten our interests.

The religious fundamentalists in the frontier regions of Pakistan have been recruiting, training, and developing human resources that are returning to secular life in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Those operatives number in the tens of thousands at least and are in military and political positions of government as well as every normal occupation. They are by directive spreading the influence of the fundamentalists, and without much opposition from the citizenry.

The operatives go into mainstream life gather intelligence and feed it back to the fundamentalists planning the revolution. The operations designed to bring about a revolution are not necessarily all violent or illegal. The model being used in southern Iraq is very effective at bringing about change while neutralizing Western power without violent conflict. In the absence of violent events the US politicians and the US military has little justification to act in that region. When the civil authority of Pakistan and Afghanistan is answering to the Fundamentalists of the frontier region like the officials of Iraq are answering to Moktada Al Sadr, we will establish diplomatic ties and alliances with them. Unless they do something stupid like 911 which I honestly don't expect. They might engage in some terrorist acts but nothing that would justify our direct assault or full force invasion... at least not in the next few years.
