Hi Jim.

re: "... the implications of all-IP were an understated and important contributory factor in the meltdown, and one for which operators have devised no unified or effective countermeasures."

Nicely said, and very true, IMO. I did mean to get back to your last post, upstream, but it appears much of what I was mulling has already been covered in the last half-dozen or so messages that have been posted since. One area in which I'm not so sure we are in agreement concerns your use of the terms "innovation" and "new entrants". Innovation is always a slippery, moving target and one that's hard to gain consensus on, I know. That said, you've suggested that new Internet entrants mostly adhere to standards in order to be able to innovate, whereas I see this as cobbling at the edges in order to achieve mostly incremental gains. Then again, in addition to defining "innovation", we should also agree on a more specific definition of which layer(s) these alleged improvements or innovations are actually taking place.

I'm again being pressed elsewhere, but I wanted to pass these few thoughts along to you for your consideration, if not also to demonstrate that I've by no means forgotten about this or our other exchange. Later.
