@Joe Yes, this move would be extremly cheap for Samsung - way too cheap. Keep in mind, that Samsung in general isn't doing takeovers - I haven't seen anything for a long time -> its not their strategy (they try to do it by itself). Actually, the time for takeovers in the memory segment is extremly good, probably the best in the last decade, the problem is, that nearly all players don't have deep pockets today and stock prices are low too. So, paying much cash is a no go and paying with shares is expansive too, thats why, only a very small amount could do it (like Samsung) and/or PE.
Should be interesting, what new Spansion will do in the next time - I hope they will look at competative solutions with kind of charge trap very sharp. I don't know, how a solution could look like, but I have said already, that I'm not a very big friend of the licencing modell just because the amount of money is way too small. What Spansion really needs are competitors which can't go on and have problems with newer nodes -> its the same like Intel - they are mass- producing 45nm already and all the other guys try to find out, how they should do this. On the other hand, some one-time fees in the 3 digit mio. region would be welcome too. So, lets wait and see.
