i assume you paid tax on moving your 401k to roth. i moved mine to regular ira and avoided tax. this gave me longer to enjoy the base and let it grow , hopefully, vs less money to invest. many moved from ira to roth during the peak stock market and paid high taxes and then lost it all in the roth as the market crashed.
my 401k was more than competitive and allowed me to retire 15 years earlier. i doubt most 401k plans are as poor as you describe.

i even taped my 401k twice during those years, once to buy up in housing in va, and once for kid college expenses.. both times i made sure i didn't hit to the point i lost company contributions.

basically 401k for many is the only savings they will ever achieve in their life times.. esp. if they never buy a home.
