The funds available to me under the 401-K plan were pathetic. They had high fees and poor performance. If this is normal then it may not be a bad thing that people are raiding their 401-K's now.

Those of us who work in Silicon Vallety maybe have a different view of employer 401(k) plans. Since most of us change jobs every few years, the employer plan is really just a temporary place to park money. Then everytime we change jobs, most of us roll them over into a personal IRA account.

So the crappy employer plans are just a necessary evil en route to liberating the tax-sheltered funds.
