I agree with you that there is a substantial risk of downside. Even my stocks in companies like Fording Coal that are not denominated in dollars get hammered when the market is down. Most individual investors will sell a stock that is up over the dog that is dragging them down.

The important thing to remember is that in a depression real businesses suffer, but they continue to provide revenue streams. If an owner is upside down in a business then it will fail for the same reason the house gets foreclosed. If one is sufficiently capitalized the business continues to provide a living. The standard declines, but the living is there.

I have been positioned defensively against dollar value declines for a few years.

"I think what you're hearing from me is a healthy respect for what could happen if things don't go well. We need leadership right here - right now! We don't need universal health care or a guy who has no experience but can deliver a speech."

Remember that eloquence appears to be the only thing that liberals admire. They constantly hammer on a brilliant President who appears to struggle in public speaking yet flock to the eloquent empty suit. I suspect you will find that as a President even though Obamanomics are bad for business, democrats will perceive him to be a genuine leader. Cognitive people will observe and judge him differently.
