Bill, There has been some commentary about the nature and future potential of the merced chip to be announced in detail on the 14th of
October, 1997.

Comments?

OK. Merced is a 64 bit microprocessor. Comes out of the chute first running HP Unix (HP UX). Santa Cruz Operations is working on AT&T/Berkeley Unix compatibility. This should follow soon. Microsoft probably comes in third with NT for Merced. Compaq and probably at least a dozen more server companies have had input to the design. HP, of course, has the inside track, having been working on it with Intel since 1994.

Some performance curves I've seen from HP show Merced based servers to be from 5 times as powerful to well over 10X their current most powerful servers, on a CPU to CPU basis. The higher power ones come later, as Intel gets to finer line-width lithographies and, therefore, faster clock speeds.

Enough for now.
