The NYT endorsed McCain. At the time of their endorsement, they were aware of this story. But they could not verify it because no one stepped forward. Now, I believe the conservative publications are coming forward with witnesses (not sure how true they are). They are producing these witnesses for NYT and are pressuring them to go after the story. My read is that between now and the convention, if they can bring him down, then the conservatives can come up with their own nominee at the convention and turn McCain's delegates around. The Republicans, conservatives and neocons are in disarray like we have never seen before.
