Yes, if it can be established beyond reasonable doubt that events unfolded as the NYT claimed, the McCain's denials will become a huge political liability in the fall campaign.

You can be sure that the Washington media will be grilling everyone who might have been in the loop back then, to get more confirmation if it exists.
