Firefox LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
I had a configuration problem I traced to my .cshrc file. I use a tcsh and not a bash shell for users. I found as I used the same .cshrc file for several users, starting firefox by different users were not independent, but all acted as if all were owned and configured by the first user who started firefox.

The problem was an artefact of the setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH
in my .cshrc. In that definition I was pointing to a director of MOZILLA libraries that worked with firefox but also screwed up the operation.

This was a weird problem and troubleshooting occured over several months.
