Having the opinion that life started out very simple (and either one or at least a fairly low number of species) on Earth and then evolved over time, doesn't mean you have to have the opinion that God doesn't exist, or that he "evolved". Recognizing that species have evolved is hardly an assertion that everything that ever existed (even in the natural world, let alone if you believe in the supernatural) evolved in the same way.
