I believe that his advocacy for alternative energy source development and public policy to decrease demand (eg higher gas taxes) are based in concern for the future of the nation, not just in self-serving promotion of his own business interests. He sees that many politicians don't want to come to grips with the problem, preferring to say whatever it takes to get votes and then do nothing substantial that might put at risk their grip on political power. And he sees that huge amounts of $$ are moving out of his country, weakening it, as a result of dependence on foreign sources of oil. Oil is a finite resource for which world-wide demand is undeniably increasing. As a person whose expertise in energy is recognized, Boone is speaking up about this dangerous situation he sees facing America.

T Boone Pickens is a very smart and very rich old guy. I'm sure that through BP Capital he is still working to make money, but it is clear to me that for patriotic motives he hopes to use his influence and power to support wiser energy strategies both private & public because he understands that to be in the best interests of his country.

Also have to like him for being a big supporter of the 'Swift Boat Vets' against Kerry in the US presidential election last time around. And for being an animal rights advocate.
