Did you watch the debate last night? I felt a tinge of sadness for Hillary even as I think she will be a tragic President.

Yes, I watched it. Because she didn't vigorously attack Obama and because she actually passed up moments to attack and because of that last comment, I concluded she was laying out a path to a gracious way to get out. I don't think she's made that decision yet but she didn't want to do anything last night to block that.

I thought Obama was weak early, clearly low on energy from a cold and, of course, he always starts slow. And she was all energy and very, very sharp--good lines, good thinking, well delivered.

She only attacked when offered that from the questioners. So, again, I concluded she had decided to leave herself a gracious way out.

I was extremely impressed with his reply about delusional supporters. I assume he and his staff had prepared for that but he handled it extremely well. And the smile on her face was something like "boy, did you do that well, congrats."

Saving some very large extraneous event, the nomination is Obama's. Then we'll see how inventive the Rep attack machine is and whether Obama can parry it as successfully as he parried the Clinton machine.

So, now there is a chance that in 09 we have a white female as the Speaker of the House, a white female as the majority leader in the senate, a black male as the president of the US, and a white southern male as the vp. Now that's a very large, critical symbolic difference.
