My guess would be that Obama is relatively ignorant and somewhat apathetic about the military, and careless with his statements about them.

Not that I would put it past him to lie (a politician lying, Oh my God I've never heard of such a thing), but if this is a lie, from what I can tell its an incredibly stupid one.

I say "from what I can tell" because I can't look at the video at this time. I'll check it out tonight or over the weekend.

Edit - If he's claiming that he directly heard this reported to him (not some 2nd or third hand report which could get garbled in transition, or which could rely on someone else's lie) than either he's lying or the ignorance/apathy/carelessness would have to be strong enough to make his own memories of the incident a total hash. Eyewitness testimony is often pretty bad. Peoples think they see things different then what really happened, and then over time their memories can get distorted, but if this was a big enough issue for him to comment publicly on than you would think he would take a minute to try to figure out what really happened.
