Surely with all being failures, you can document as least one instance where a country had universal care and dropped it?

The USSR didn't drop socialism, it imploded. It took a long time and the steps that President Reagan took accelerated it. Give Carter another term and then add a couple terms for another weak President and they could have gone on much longer. The equivalent of the arms race in medicine does not exist because of the socialized medicine systems being "free riders" as the US funds the medical research they benefit from. Still eventually we will see some of these systems that are showing signs of problems implode from the imbalances between costs, service levels, demographics and service level demands (to name a few of the forces).
