It's difficult to know exactly what went on during his time on the Mekong. But it seems unlikely that both his accounts of being complicit in war atrocities and his accounts of being a bonafide war-hero are both fair characterizations. Although perhaps politicians should be respected for their ability to spin data in various ways to achieve various objectives?
