we all are paying for them some how

No, and that's a key point. We aren't. We paid into Medicare and SS. That's the reason those benefits are so well grounded in our society. They have a certain legitimacy. Medicaid and SCHIP come from the general fund. They are free in the contribution sense of the word because half of us, all the ones who are eligible, pay no income tax.

It's unknown how universal health care would be funded. There are various schemes out there. But, however it is funded, you can bet your bottom dollar that at least three quarters of us, maybe as much as ninety percent, will have gotten back vastly more than they pay in.

Now, I'm aware of your discussion with Tim where you assert that if you pay a dime for something that costs the taxpayers a thousand dollars, you haven't gotten a freebie, that somehow paying in a pittance in and getting a windfall out is "paying for them." But, in reality, someone else is "paying for them" and you are on the dole. The someone else is just generous enough to not only pay but allow you to keep some dignity.
