But close behind is my #2 rant about the decline of US corporate competitiveness during the Bush administration.

For no particular reason, your post brought this to mind.

At one point in the second half of the 19th century, British companies owned huge chunks of western US land. I forget how much and just why, though my memory, very untrustworthy, tells me it was related to railroad expansion.
