6.0 earthquake strikes NE Nevada, felt in Utah - Elko Daily Free Press -
ELKO, Nev. - Wells, Nev., residents were shaken this morning by a 6.0-magnitude earthquake that caused at least one building to collapse and forced a truck stop to evacuate, authorities said. The quake was felt as far away as Utah, Idaho and California.

Elko County Undersheriff Rocky Gonzalez said damage was widespread, with people reporting cracked walls and foundations.
Gonzalez said the most serious damage was reported in the town's largely unoccupied historic district.
The Flying J Truck Stop was evacuated because of a propane leak, Gonzalez said.
A manager at the Flying J said the store was a wreck, with groceries and goods scattered. One woman was reportedly injured when a cigarette rack fell on her.
David Hanson, CEO of Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko, said the hospital has not received any patients in the emergency room and no one has been admitted due to the earthquake.
"Cupboards flew open, all of the dishes are on the floor, books off the shelves," Free Press correspondent Elaine Swanson reported from her home about an hour after the 6:16 a.m. quake. "We were very fortunate. The power is still on, the water lines and toilets didn't break."
School was canceled at Wells Junior/Senior High and Wells Elementary.
Elko County School District spokeswoman Beth Kern said she heard there may be some structural damage and the phone lines are out at the schools, but she has not yet confirmed damage.
The magnitude of the quake, initially estimated at 6.3, was later revised to 6.0 by the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo.
The quake was centered in a sparsely populated area 11 miles southeast of Wells, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
"Definitely a lot of people felt this, and if they were sleeping, they were awoken," said USGS geophysicist Carrieann Bedwell.
"It was pretty bad," said Jane Kelso, who answered the phone at the Motel 6 in Wells. "Everything in our whole building shook. "We have cracks in our walls."
Elko and Spring Creek residents also reported feeling their homes shake, and items falling off shelves.
"All people should inspect gas vent pipes due to the earthquake," said Elko Fire Chief Alan Kightlinger. "Make sure they haven't separated for carbon monoxide issues. Also, check your house for gas line smells. If you have gas line smells immediately call 911 and evacuate the property until we can get there and stabilize the situation.
Lou Schack of Barrick Gold of North America said he had not heard of any reports of the region's gold mines being affected by the earthquake.
"Most of the underground (mines) are pretty far from Wells," he said.
In Twin Falls, residents reported severe shaking and items falling off shelves.
Smaller earthquakes are common in northeastern Nevada. A 3.5 quake was reported in the same spot south of Wells last March.
Small quakes also have hit south and west of Elko in recent years.
