f the same money was put into wind and solar power and research, we would be far better off.

There is a major advantage to wind and solar over nuclear in that the eneergy supply for the first two is free - whereas that is not the case for nuclear. So with nuclear you are at the whims of the market for supply. There is a limited availability of uranium and that price will only go up.
