I love to pick high percentage three-point shooting teams early in the tournament. This can make them giant killers. But the percentages eventually get to them and just one bad game kills them. Ironically, Tennessee is big on taking threes. Duke is another team that comes to mind. Anyhow, that's another reason why I love teams that have great defense. Same in football, baseball (pitching) and so on. I just haven't figured out the best teams on defense yet.

As an aside, if anyone cares, there was a great article in the most recent Sports Illustrated (p48) about John Calipari’s “Dribble-Drive Motion Offense” aka AASAA (Attack Attack Skip Attack Attack). Here’s a similar Sporting News article on it: sportingnews.com.

The way we normally teach basketball offense to kids is a) set screens, b) cut to the basket, and/or c) work the ball into the big man down low. This offense does things completely opposite. Rather, to be very basic, you set up on the perimeter with one man down low. Each guy with the ball takes turns trying to drive to the basket. If he's guarded by the guys down low, he bounce passes to the big man cutting across to the vacated low post spot. If he's guarded by the guards up top, he kicks the ball back out to the perimeter for an open three. It's fun to watch and very high-scoring when it works. Additionally, because so few guys hang down low, it normally allows you to get back faster on defense.
