You state:

I think there is a misunderstanding here! I think of the market as what makes money for the people who participate in it. Developers develop software for someone else who in turn takes the developed software and sells it to another market (e.g. R&D, manufacturing, MIS, semiconductor industry, celluar phones, ATM, etc.). If that other market is expanded and the people who are considered to be software sellers not able to take advantage of that expansion then they will come to require their developers make something that they can sell to that expanded market! Now if the developers continue to like some painful, proprietory technology that can not take advantage of the expanded market then their employers (i.e. Mr. Software seller) by the rules of free market and capitalism is forced to either ask them to stop using that technology and come up with something better so he can make more money, or he would ask those developers to look for another job else where!

Thus with the new expansion and evolution in the computing model (thanks to Sun's Java) the developers preference is irrelevant! Despite the fact that I believe strongly in this irrelevancy I can strongly say that when it comes to preference today's software developers prefer the Java technology, anyway!
