I think Obama made a mistake by not immediately disassociating himself from the NY times article. He could have just said "I'm not going to play that kind of politics." McCain would have had to come out with a similar type of statement.

Unfortunately it may be too late now for a relatively clean campaign.

It was nice while it lasted........sigh
