People are inherently lazy. Ok, people are evolutionarily (is that a word?) geared towards minimizing caloric expenditure.

Organized religion, preachers, pastors, politicos, celebrities, talk shows, schools, clubs, organizations of all kinds appeal to our laziness. Join XYZ, follow ABC and you instantly belong to a well-defined ethic without having to start a philosophy from scratch.

I have heard that it is difficult to be a Dem activist because it is too much like high school. You have to do grunt work, pay dues and move up slowly. OTOH, it is easy to be a Republican as long as you check your brains at the door. I have heard Republican meet ups are very welcoming but you can't think for yourself at them.

IMO, this is why there are more Republicans than there really need be...joining is easy and why there are fewer Democrats than there really need be...the party is a pain in the neck.

I prefer independence. You have to think a little harder and reason a little more but you don't have to deal with annoying people in either party.
