Second Rochester-area station offering ethanol

Associated Press - February 20, 2008 1:25 PM ET

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A second gas station in the greater Rochester area plans to start selling 85% ethanol fuel starting today - the second station in the region to do so.

Owner Gil Tegg says his Mobil Mart on Brooks Avenue on the city's west side could begin offering E85 as early as this afternoon.

It's coming from the new Western New York Energy LLC ethanol plant outside of Medina, in Orleans County, and will retail for $2.60 a gallon.

The fuel is a mix of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. Many new cars models can run on it.

Tegg tells the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle he invested about $40,000 in station upgrades and special equipment last fall in anticipation of carrying either E85 or some other alternative fuel.

Earlier this month, the Mobil 12 Corners service station in Brighton also began offering E85.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, nearly 700 fueling stations offer E85, which should not be used in conventional, gasoline-powered engines.
