I think you and Teddy are trying to put a PC spin on O'Reilly's words that he never even thought of. It's become quite the thing. "Well, we can't crucify him for what he actually said, so let's lie about what he meant". Get a life, dingbat.
You do realize now that lynching was never a common means of legal execution? What do think was done to common criminals before the 20th century who had committed capital offenses? Electrocution? Yeah. You probably do. You undoubtedly, without the help of google, have no idea when electricity was commonly available. Do you know that the Guillotine was never a common means of legal execution? The means was invented by Dr. Guillotine for Louis XIV shortly before the French Revolution. (Louis got to experience its effects himself. Its action being so fast, it is unknown whether he had second thoughts about his commission to invent it. :-)
OR perhaps you thought they were beheaded. No banana. Beheading was largely reserved for royalty who had pissed off royalty who ranked them. en.wikipedia.org
The gas chamber? Not quite. Its first use was in the US on February 8, 1924 in NV. Never has been common, even in the US. en.wikipedia.org
So we come to hanging. Easy, can be done practically anywhere. Even if you have to erect a gallows, still relatively cheap. en.wikipedia.org
As a form of judicial execution in England, hanging is thought to date from the Saxon period, approximately around 400. Records of the names of British hangmen begin with Thomas de Warblynton in the 1360s; complete records extend from the 1500s to the last hangmen, Robert Leslie Stewart and Harry Allen, who conducted the last British executions in 1964. en.wikipedia.org
en.wikipedia.org Be sure and see how many countries HAVE used hanging as a legal means of execution.
