I think I finished with BP in the 1980s on NZ$49,000 per year, but maybe I got a 20% "living in London and Antwerp" expatriate payment now that you mention it. Not to mention free accommodation [large high-end], free private schooling for 4 children [which we declined in London because we thought the local state school would be socially better for the children, though in Antwerp they went to Antwerp International which was great], some car funding [I think it was an interest free loan - can't recall] free business class travel home once a year or maybe it was two, great meals in the BP restaurant for 5p, free medical care.

So, it's fair to say I'm exaggerating by some amount. And if we measured that in 2007 dollars instead of 1987 dollars, I am blown out of the water with a wild exaggeration.

But the Norwegian wages were minimum and didn't include accommodation, food, medical care etc which the mariners get.

Good catch!
