Yes immigrants do want to work ... my parents are immigrants and worked very hard and have become quite wealthy as a result.

What I don't understand is why the bottom rung of the economic ladder would have ever held any attraction for them ... what is the benefit to them of "would you like fries with that?" when they can start out in a job that pays five times as much and offers a good future?

I don't understand the connection between being an immigrant and the bottom rung of the economic ladder ... there are many immigrant groups who have been very prosperous here and who don't even know what the bottom rung looks like ... my pakistani physician is certainly unfamiliar with it ... digging ditches is not a condition for getting a green card.
