Living here in Colorado, one of the first things I did after getting my Private Pilot's license, was to take a 4 hour mountain check ride. Our mountains are littered with smashed up airplanes due to people not knowing how to fly at the necessary altitudes and wind conditions that exist. We landed at Granby, Aspen and Leadville (that one is the highest airport in the country). To make sure you get the "feel" for all of this, the check ride is done in a Cessna 172. This airplane is BARELY hefty enough for altitude, so you really have to pay attention to virtually everything you're doing, and always have a plan B.
