The more important point is the price increments for the policies with $2500 and $500 deductibles are not that great.

That's not very helpful for people who can't afford the coverage for themselves first. You have to pay for the baseline before you can pay for the increment.

IMO, that's what's so good about SCHIP. It covers kids. Covering kids is not expensive and you get a lot of good will for doing so. Conversely, you look Dickensonian if you obstruct it.

I understand that. There's risk there. But if you can take the wind out of the single-payer sails with it, I think it's worth it. Remember, if you take away the demographic of those uninsured who can't afford insurance, the poster child goes up in smoke.

What do I get in return?

You can negotiate for some insurance price lowering measures such as tort reform or employer-provided insurance reform.
