Sounds like an H-1 temporary worker visa, very common in the tech sector. Since it would be easy for fraudsters to set up fake companies then claim they needed someone from overseas, the whole process is vetted very carefully on both ends. (My wife did a consular tour in Amsterdam so I heard all about this stuff in detail.)
