Ox: I agree with you 100%. The system is so skewed to screw the little guy. Aside from that, now the big boys are hiding behind derivatives, collateralized obligations, leveraged instruments, and are screwing each other. No longer is there such a thing as "honor amongst thieves". The SEC propagates the entire operation and is about as effective as stopping an avalanche with a snowmobile.

But all this aside, human nature will invent new ways to innovate. You've heard the old story about 15th century London they used to hang pick-pocketers: and actually would arrest new offenders during the mass hangings that drew large crowds.

We need new laws. We need to rethink the whole idea of "market makers" and specialists. With the advent of world wide markets in real time, we need to think again about a system that matches a buyer with a seller. Period. Quick settlement times as in "debit card fast".... and have a real time system.
