I checked several sources for estimates. According to UBS 1998 (we
are now in 1998) will be 15% taxed, and 1999 (beginning April 1998)
will be fully taxed. I found some widely diverging estimates, which
probably partly explains the volitility.

Schwab Survey First Call Zacks
Number Analysts 6 6 8
1998 Consensus 1.90 2.22 2.43
1998 Range .67-2.40 1.50-2.45 NA
1999 Consensus 1.95 2.17 2.53
1999 Range 1.20-2.36 1.20-2.68 NA
This Qtr-Q2 98 NA .52 .56
Q2-98 Range NA .45-.56 NA

Considering that in Q1 1998 Spectrian earned .72 it seems remarkable
that one analyst in the Schwab survey has an estimate of .67 for the
full year. He either is way out of date, or is forecasting a loss
for the remainder of the year. Another analyst in First Call, and
probably also in Schwab has only $1.50 for the year. Since he must
be forecasting at least $.45 this quarter which is the minimum for
this quarter, that would be $1.17 year to date, so he must have only
a profit of $.33 for the remainder of the year.

Other than these two, the consensus for this year seems to be
$2.30-$2.40 or a little less. Most estimates seem to have 1999
about the same.

Let's hope those two lowball estimates are WAY off the mark,

Carl
