You want to be able to discern the biggest lie in that article?.. Read the following paragraph:

This is like arguing that applying fertilizer to your lawn would result in the creation of an uncontrollable jungle... And that's just BS!!

The problem is that they fail to recognize that any fertilizer man might apply would only meet the temporary needs of the algae.. After all, the reason we're applying it in the first place is because there aren't enough nutrients. Thus, if you over fertilize, you cease it until the phytoplankton use up the available nutrients and go back to dormancy.

The only thing that could cause what they fear would be massive desertification of land areas, and having the wind blow all of those nutrients into the oceans.

But, of course, we've all implemented soil conservation policies to prevent exactly that.. Which is another reason the oceans are depleted of nutrients.

Bottom line.. you apply nutrients where there are none currently.. Not where there are already sufficient up-wellings..

Nothing different from selectively applying fertilizer to dead spots on your lawn to balance it out. You certainly wouldn't apply the same amount to areas that are already flourishing (unless you're an idiot)..
