Hello Dieter,

PlateSpin is in an interesting business, and one that could be a product that Novell sales channel could sell.

With the increases in computing power, virtualization of hardware is quickly becoming the norm. There are several leaders in this arena - like VMware - and even Microsoft with Virtual PC and Virtual Server. In the Open Source world Xen has picked up rapidly. There are several others.

What all of these various solutions allow you to do is run one or more "virtual machines" on a single physical box. This is now commonplace. The real value with this technology are going to be the management tools of a virtualized data center.

This is exactly what PlateSpin appears to be providing. They seem to have tools to analyze the various virtualized machines, and also back them up and migrate them from physical machine to physical machine. This becomes very powerful and valuable to someone who might have to manage tens or hundreds of virtualized machines.

With the corporate contacts that Novell has, I believe they could really make some money with this if they are able to become a neutral company. Meaning: If they can lose the anti-Microsoft attitude they could begin to sell this to any corporation to manage virtualized servers running any operating system!

I'm not sure what this solution sells for ... but if Novell could become more neutral about OS, they might be able to make some real money selling this. This is a good investment IMHO ...

I'm not yet sure if they are exploring various product integration points ... yet ... I'm not sure what Novell has been doing to automate any of this with XEN and NDS ... if anything.
