You buy the weapon systems to fit the plans you have. We have been fighting small wars for many years. And will probably continue to do so. We weren't ready to do the rebuild. Now we are getting it done.

The big fight within all services is how big we are going to be, and how kinetic.

Sorry Bill that analysis is wrong.

On Sept 31, 2001 we had 1,385,116 uniformed members.
As of last report 12/31/2007 we had 1,368,226.

ON 9/30/07 the army reported strength was 522,017.
About then Gates authorized an increase of some 50,000+/- soldiers.
ON 12/31/07 the army reported strength was 518,068.

There is no big fight over how big we will be. And kinetic VS non-kinetic is hardly an issue. If we cannot build an army we cannot become more kinetic.

Where is the rebuild? Where is the strength increase? The cold fact is money will no longer buy a larger US military, and there is only one other solution.
