There are plenty of stable countries that aren't democracies, and some democracies like Israel have been in a constant state of war for their whole existance. The current instability in the Middle East is a product of a calculated policy to weaken the region after the breakup of the Ottoman empire. Even so most fractionalized regions of the world eventually manage to resort themselves into stable and functioning regions (i.e Italy, Central Europe, the Stans, and Central America). The Middle East has been thwarted in this process.
