Even if it was an obvious mistake (and it isn't) that wouldn't mean it was obvious or predictable that the war would last that long. The odds that the US will be at war in Iraq for the next 100 years, very closely approach zero. They are down there with the odds of an alien invasion, or the sun unexpectedly going nova.
