The nuclear waste is stored in the nw part of the state, quite far from St. George. Uranium mining was done near St. George, and some may be happeing again with it's price going way up. The old nuclear tests happened not super far from there in Nevada.

I love the redrock desert around St. George. Several of our most spectacular National Parks and monuments are very close by, but even I didn't want to live there. It's a day trip for me from SLC.
