If I was very wealthy I might do just that, but since I'm not, and since the government takes so much of what I do have, its not exactly easy.

I won't be eligible for Medicare for awhile, but when I am, I'd probably be in the same boat as Lane. The private insurance available for people of 65 assumes you already have Medicare, and covers gaps in Medicare, or amounts past limits in Medicare. It doesn't cover what Medicare provides because Medicare has driven out private insurance out of that part of the market (except for "Medicare advantage" which uses private insurers, but even then its within the Medicare system so you can't totally escape unless you self insure.
