Have you ever seen Culloden? It is one of the few battlefields I've been to where the battle seems like it happened just yesterday. You can really imagine it there- especially since the setting is so spectacular. Every time we went there, the sky was cloudy, and shafts of light were shining down between the clouds on to the battlefield. The historical markers, that tell you where the various clans were, and where the battle lines were drawn, are helpful without being ostentatious. It's an amazing place. For a real sense of the past, and connection with it, I can think of few places to equal Culloden. :-) I know it's a bit remote from the Civil War, but your post made me think of it.
